Unlike Fork-Join, where the coordinator knows the full scope upfront and assigns fixed tasks, the Subagent Scout pattern is iterative and adaptive. The lead agent sends scouts to investigate, reviews their findings, and decides what to explore next based on what it has learned.

This pattern mirrors how experienced researchers actually work. You start with a broad question, send out initial probes, and let early findings shape your next round of investigation. A scout might return with an unexpected finding that reshapes the entire search. The lead agent adjusts its strategy in real time, dispatching new scouts to follow promising leads and abandoning dead ends.

The key differentiator is that the lead agent maintains a continuously updated mental model of the problem space. Each scout's findings are integrated into this model, which informs the next dispatch decision. The pattern naturally handles ambiguity and unknown unknowns -- exactly the conditions present when evaluating technologies you have not used before.

Why Subagent Scout Fits Technology Evaluation

Integration Feasibility Scout -- "Compatibility Assessor" Mission: Evaluate how a specific technology candidate integrates with the existing technology stack. Investigate API compatibility, data format alignment, deployment requirements, and migration pathways. Return a feasibility assessment with estimated integration effort and identified blockers.

Workflow Walkthrough

Step 1 -- Define the evaluation objective. The Technology Evaluation Director receives the problem statement (e.g., "We need to add a vector search capability to our existing PostgreSQL-based product for AI-powered semantic search").
