"Why can't I just write a really good prompt?"
It's a fair question. Modern LLMs are incredibly capable. A well-crafted single prompt can produce impressive results. So when does it make sense to use multiple agents instead?
The answer comes down to task complexity and output quality.
Single agent: You ask for a competitive analysis of three competitors. The model produces a surface-level overview — maybe a paragraph on each competitor covering market position, strengths, and weaknesses. It's generic and misses nuance.
Agent team (Fork-Join, 4 agents): One agent per competitor conducts deep analysis. A synthesis agent combines findings, identifies patterns, and surfaces competitive gaps. Each competitor analysis is 3-4x more detailed, and the cross-competitor insights are things the single agent never surfaces.
Winner: Agent team. The depth difference is significant.
Single agent: You provide a topic and outline. The model writes a solid first draft with decent structure and flow.
Agent team (Sequential Pipeline, 3 agents): A researcher gathers key points, a writer produces the draft, an editor refines it. The output is more polished, but the overhead of coordination means it takes longer and the improvement is marginal.
Winner: Single agent. The coordination cost isn't justified for straightforward content.
Single agent: Produces a high-level plan covering messaging, timeline, and channels. Tends to be generic and misses dependencies between workstreams.
Agent team (Parallel Workers, 5 agents): Dedicated agents for messaging strategy, channel planning, timeline/milestones, risk assessment, and metrics framework. Each section is actionable and specific. The synthesis captures cross-workstream dependencies.
Winner: Agent team. Launch plans have too many dimensions for one agent to handle well.
Single agent: Generates 10 subject line variants in seconds. Quick, effective, and exactly what you need.
Agent team: Overkill. Multiple agents debating subject lines adds latency without meaningful quality improvement.
Winner: Single agent. Simple generative tasks don't need coordination.
Single agent: Covers financial, market, and operational aspects but at a shallow level. Tends to miss risks that require domain-specific knowledge.
Agent team (Advisory Debate, 4 agents): Financial analyst, market analyst, operations expert, and risk assessor each contribute deep analysis. The debate pattern surfaces conflicting viewpoints and forces explicit risk acknowledgment.
Winner: Agent team. Due diligence requires the kind of multi-perspective rigor that single agents can't replicate.

Single agents are fast and effective for focused tasks. Agent teams are better for complex, multi-dimensional problems where depth and rigor matter. The key is matching the approach to the problem — not defaulting to one or the other.
